This is one of the most interesting reds I’ve tasted! An experimental, non-vintage blend from unorthodox California winemaker Sean Thackrey.
This example is the 27th release of what Thackrey describes as the “Chefs Special”. Never standing still, The Pleiades is an ever changing blend of varieties sourced from growers throughout Napa Valley, Marin County and Mendocino.
This release includes a blend of Sangiovese, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Mourvèdre, but who knows what other secrets this wine may hold.
Bordering on garnet in the glass, there’s an immediately appealing bright glossy nature about this.
Intense and complex aromas of raspberry, red cherries, cassis, cinnamon, eucalyptus and mint are just some of the notes coming through.
The pronounced palate includes more red fruits with dried cranberry accompanied by violets, cherry blossom, and subtle rose water.
A wonderfully balanced wine with well rounded tannins, body and acidity lead to a lingering wine with a long finish.
At the time of writing, the Pleiades is currently on its 28th release (XXVIII), which no doubt has its own wonderfully bizarre recipe for success. I implore any readers to pick up a bottle and experience this cult classic for yourselves!
